Most parents are diligent about promoting positive dental habits at home, but what about when your kids are at school? While you might limit candy and sugary drinks at home, your children spend the majority of their waking hours away from your supervision.
Help your kids practise good dental care, even while at school, with these tips:
Pack a Healthy Lunch: Send your child to school with a healthy lunch filled with foods that help strengthen teeth, not contribute to plaque buildup or decay. Think crunchy veggies and sliced fruit instead of processed sugary snacks.
Advocate for Snack Changes: Encourage schools to change available snacks to healthier options. Replacing candy and chips with orange slices, nuts and granola bars will lead to healthier gums and teeth.
Soda and Sugary Drinks: In addition to advocating for healthier snacks, you can promote smarter beverage choices. Soda can coat teeth with sugar, leading to plaque and staining. Water and milk are healthier options.
Encourage Brushing: Pack a travel-sized or disposable toothbrush in your kids’ bags so they can brush their teeth after lunch. Also, remember to provide some floss picks so they get in the habit of using them for a full cleaning.
Set your children up for success by ensuring they have everything they need to practise proper dental hygiene — even at school.
