Pet Springtime Safety Tips
With spring just around the corner, it’s time to remind pet owners of a few springtime safety tips to keep your dog and cat healthy as the warm weather approaches.
Spring is a strange time of year, where the temperature can rise and fall multiple times a day. Make sure you’re always aware of how cold it is outside, especially with the wind chill, and
time plan your walks or outdoor time accordingly. Observe your pet’s body language for signs that they’re cold and ready to go inside.
As the weather warms, everything that’s been hidden under the snow will be revealed. Trash, birdseed or even bird droppings could be a tempting—but dangerous—snack for your pet. Always do a full inspection of your yard before letting your dog or cat outside, and always pay attention during walks to see if they’ve spotted anything harmful.
Many places use salt during the winter. As ice and snow melt, there could be an excess of salt on the sidewalks. Always rinse your pet’s paws after walks to avoid skin irritation and help prevent them from licking their paws and ingesting large amounts of salt.
Another common springtime safety hazard are bulb plants such as tulips and lilies. If consumed, they can cause anything from mild stomach irritation to fatal poisoning, so it’s imperative to keep a close watch on pets when they’re around the garden.
Even with the best precautions and springtime safety preparation, your pet could suffer from an accident or illness.
