It’s been a few years since most people have been travelling for holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, etc. So, while it’s ideal to sort out your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip, it’s understandable if you’ve forgotten. Fortunately, you can book travel insurance at any time. That means, yes, you can get last-minute travel insurance for your vacation right up until the day you depart.

We’ve answered more of your questions about last-minute travel insurance for holidays here. Give it a glance if you’re in this situation.

How late can I get travel insurance?

In most cases, you can buy travel insurance right up until the day you leave for your vacation. However, different companies have varying policies regarding how late you can book. It can be as specific as allowing or not allowing one to get insurance after they’ve gone through customs or if you’ve already left your home. For Tour+Med travel insurance, you must purchase insurance before you leave Canada. However, you can extend your coverage before the expiration date of your insurance policy.

When does travel insurance kick in?

When you buy travel insurance, typically, you’re covered from your departure date. It usually starts from the time you leave your home. So, if you wake up on the day you leave and realize you’ve forgotten to get travel insurance, you should still have some time to do so. It doesn’t take too long to get your policy in place. However, keep in mind that it can vary depending on the company and the plan you purchase.

Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve started my holidays?

Depending on where you’re travelling to, you might be able to purchase a travel insurance policy after you’ve left home. However, most insurance plans do not allow you to get coverage while abroad due to the risk of fraud. For example, let’s say a traveller loses their luggage while on vacation and then tries to get travel insurance to make a claim. This would be fraud.

Therefore, leaving it until the last minute to get travel insurance for a trip within Canada might still work out for you, but if you leave it until you’re already abroad, it’s not possible.
