When looking to add a new furry family member, it’s important you choose a pup that will fit your lifestyle. To help you make the right decision about the best dog for your family, take time to assess the pup’s history, spend time interacting with it and arrange for a private meeting.

While not always possible, try to meet the mother of the pup you’re considering adopting. Getting an idea of her health and disposition can tell you a lot about what to expect with your potential pet. If you’re able to meet the mother, look closely at her eyes and make sure they’re clear and bright. Observe her temperament. She should be friendly and happy to meet you and not show any signs of aggression.

If you can’t meet the mother, take some extra time to observe how the pup acts. Squat sideways and look away from it. If the pup quietly watches you or comes over to calmly greet you, it’s a sign they have a good disposition.

Adding a pet to your family is a big decision, and choosing the best dog for your family should not be done in haste. After the initial meeting with your potential pup, try to arrange a private meeting, ideally in your home. This is a great way to see how the dog will behave and interact with you and your children in your home. If you have any doubts or concerns, ask questions or ask for some additional time with the dog.

Before deciding which is the best dog to adopt, you also need to consider the pooch’s requirements and make sure you and your family can meet its needs. Some dogs are extremely high energy and thrive in a household with a big backyard and active family. Other dogs need near-constant companionship and wouldn’t do well in a setting where they’re left alone for long periods of time.

Still deciding whether you should adopt a pet?
Consider these four factors before committing to the addition of a new furry family member.
