As the weather warms up, everyone heads outside to take advantage of the rising temperatures. Often our pets accompany us, whether it’s just a lazy day in the backyard, a walk around the neighbourhood or a camping adventure. Remember to keep your pets safe while outdoors; in particular, be sure not to overlook these four summertime pet dangers.

Sunburn
Light-coloured pets with thin coats are susceptible to the painful, itching and peeling effects of sunburn. Just like humans, it’s important to be careful about your pet’s sun exposure and apply sunscreen to your dog or cat when they are outside for extended periods. Specially formulated products can help protect your pets from the sun’s harmful effects.

Hot Surfaces
The sidewalk and street can heat up quickly under the summer sun, so be sure to check the temperature of the walking surface before taking your pets outside. Paw pads are susceptible to burns and blisters, and it can be a long, painful recovery for your pets if they end up burning their paws.

Campfires
Hot, burning sticks can be a temptation for dogs — especially ones that love to fetch — but can pose a serious safety hazard. Also, some dogs have been known to get into lighter fluid, which is extremely poisonous and should always be kept out of reach of pets.

Fireworks
Fireworks can not only scare dogs and cats but also pose a serious summertime pet danger. Many fireworks look similar to pet toys, and an unleashed pet could mistake one for a plaything and run off with it. If you’re planning a backyard fireworks display, it’s best to keep dogs and cats safely inside.
