Although you love your pup, it can be easy to forget that not all people like dogs. That’s why it’s important to be a responsible pet owner and follow proper dog-walking etiquette to ensure that everyone around you is comfortable.

While obvious, it’s important to mention the two golden rules of dog walking. First, keep your pooch on a leash (unless at a specific off-leash area). Even if your dog is well-behaved and will stay by your side, people can be extremely uncomfortable when they see an unleashed dog walking around the neighbourhood. Second, always pick up after your pet. Make sure to carry bags with you and use them (even if no one is watching!).

Be Aware of Sidewalk Space
Proper dog-walking etiquette dictates that you be mindful of sidewalk space. Keep your pet snug by your side when passing a group of people and be aware of other dogs. If you’re not confident about how your pooch will react seeing another dog, it might be best to move off to the side until they pass.

Keep Dogs Out of Gardens
Homeowners can spend a lot of time on their gardens, and a responsible pet owner will respect their hard work. Keep your dog to the edge of a lawn to do their business and keep them out of freshly laid sod or gardens.

Enjoy the nice weather and take your pup for a walk around the neighbourhood. Just make sure that you follow proper dog-walking etiquette to keep everyone safe and happy.
