Now that summer is upon us and the temperature is rising, it’s important to keep a closer eye on your pets. The sun and heat can have devastating effects on dogs and cats, so follow these pet safety tips to prevent any problems.

Supply Cold Fresh Water
A constant supply of cold fresh water for your pet is always essential, but sometimes owners forget to regularly check or change the water in the summer. When it gets hot out, animals drink more water, so ensure their bowls are always full. Also, during walks and hikes, stop frequently for water breaks.

Provide Shade
If you’re enjoying outdoor activities with the family pet, remember that animals heat up faster than humans and are susceptible to heat stroke. Provide them with shaded areas to cool down in, and try to time outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day.

Keep Pets Home
If you’re spending the day running errands, please keep your pets at home. The worst place for an animal on a sunny summer day is the car. Even with the windows open, vehicles can heat up quickly and become extremely dangerous for the pets trapped inside.

Insure Your Pet
One of the best ways to keep your pets safe this summer is to make sure their insurance is up to date. Having proper pet insurance can help limit the costs of any problems your pets might have to face, including issues that result from heat stroke.
